Description
The purpose of this assignment is to continue developing your familiarity and comfort with the construction and use of data tables in Excel/OpenCalc/Sheets. Although this program allows users to do different tasks, the program functionality in this Microsoft Office application is based on data in table format. It is important that students do enough work in the application to become reasonably comfortable with the software.National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS)1. Open the MODULE 4 Excel file that you used for the software practice exercises.2. Click on the ASSIGNMENT 4 worksheet (bottom left tabs of the program) which has been set up with the initial table you will need to complete the assignment.3. You will be populating this table with data from the NIBRS 2020 worksheet. Choose TWO CITIES from ONE STATE that are different from the one we used in the exercises. 4. You will copy and paste all of the data (column A-N) for each city for both 2019 and 2020 from the NIBRS worksheet into the ASSIGNMENT 4 worksheet. In this case, you can do a simple COPY & PASTE function because there are no formulas associated with the NIBRS volume data. 5. Choose TWO of the VIOLENT CRIMES and TWO of the PROPERTY CRIMES, your choice. You will then delete the data for the other two violent and two property crimes you did not choose. For example, you could choose: murder, rape, arson and robbery.6. Now you will INSERT and LABEL the columns needed to calculate PERCENT and RATE for each crime. Remember you can insert a column by clicking on the letters at the top then Insert up in the ribbon menu. A column will be inserted to the left of the column you clicked on.7. Include a ROW for the PERCENTAGE OF CHANGE for each city. You can also Insert a row by clicking on a row number, then Insert up in the ribbon toolbar and the row will be placed above the row you highlighted. NOTE: This is all set up exactly as you did in MODULE 4 exercise worksheet.8. Important: I must be able to check your work. The goal is for you to use Excel to calculate the results with the formulas you learned in this topic using the cell address (e.g., A1). I check this by clicking on each cell where you calculated a result and then looking up at the formula bar (see below). This also allows me to provide feedback if your results are incorrect. If I can not check your work you will not get credit for those calculations.9. Calculate the PERCENT for each of the four types of crime. The formula = crime type/total10. Calculate the RATE per 100,000 persons for each of the four types of crime for the year 2020. The formulas =crime/(population/100,000) or =(crime/population)*100,000Reminder: Crime rates (also referred to as the ‘crime index’) are usually based on a rate per 100,000 persons. Remember that rate allows us to compare incidents of crime in different areas where the size of the population is different.11. Calculate the PERCENTAGE CHANGE for each of the four types of crime. The formula = (yr2020 – yr2019)/yr201912. RATE TABLE and CHART:The final steps of this exercise involve making a CHART to compare only the crime rates in your two cities for 2020. You may also choose to create a chart of the percentage of change over time or any others you find interesting. In this same worksheet you will label your table as follows:A1: City and YearA2: CITY 2020A3: CITY 2020 B1: CRIME TYPEC1: CRIME TYPED1: CRIME TYPEE1: CRIME TYPE13. Next, you will COPY AND PASTE VALUES (Paste Special) the RATES you calculated to this table. If you choose to create additional charts then you will need to create additional tables. Remember to use the copy & “paste special – paste values” function so that you copy the cell value/results (NOTE: If you simply choose paste you will get an error message because the results which are based on a formula will not copy). 14. Highlight the rate table you have created and then choose INSERT from the ribbon toolbar. I recommend a column or bar chart. The default chart that is created will provide you with the basic information needed. Now you will edit the chart properties by editing the title and any other Chart Elements you choose. You are welcome to get creative with color, chart type, chart design, etc. Reminder: Only highlight the table where there is information, do not include empty cells.15. Finally, let’s take this one step further. You will now make a statement about your results. What story does the chart tell you about these crime rates? This requires you to think about the information and analyze it. Do not merely provide a description of the chart. (Keep this to 1 to 3 sentences). You can type directly below your chart in the worksheet, no need to submit a separate Word file.WHAT YOU ARE SUBMITTING:1. MODULE 4 EXCEL file that now includes your Assignment 4 work.Part2You will conduct a web search for data related to your final term research project and save all information in a Word file. Refer back to the video in this module folder, Software Practice: NIBRS which discussed Online Data Sources. a. Provide the URL for the data source(s). b. Make sure you open the data source to confirm that it has useful information related to your topic. You do not need to complete any formula work at this time. c. Identify and state the types of data available in your source(s).
