Purpose and Research Question

The purpose of study I chose was to investigate the experiences and resilience of low-income single female parents (FASP) who are raising adolescents enrolled in special education and engaging in risk behaviors (Bradley & Goldstein, 2022). The study aimed to provide insights into the challenges and strengths of single female parents in this specific context and explore potential avenues for improving support and assistance from educational institutions (Bradley & Goldstein, 2022).
Research questions:
1. What are the lived experiences of low-income single female parents/guardians who are raising adolescents enrolled in special education and engaging in risk behaviors?
2. From the perspective of low-income single female parents/guardians raising an adolescent who is enrolled in special education and engaging in risk behaviors, how can schools better support these families?

Assessment of the research design

When assessing how the research design was presented, the authors did a thorough job of discussing the rationale but could have elaborated a bit more on their goals and why the topic was important to them (Ravitch & Carl, 2019). The research questions where well framed and aligned with the purpose and chosen framework and the phenomenological approach. Validity was addressed through trustworthy strategies that included ??thick, rich descriptions; member checking; use ecomaps; audit trail; and reflexivity? (Bradley & Goldstein, 2022, p. 23). Discussed in the limitations of this study, only one interview site was used where the use of diverse interview sites could have been used (Bradley & Goldstein, 2022). Furthermore, due to the specific target sample of African American, low-income parent, this study potentially lacks generalizability.

Assessment of the Researcher??s Presentation of Positionality, Reflexivity, and Bias

The presentation of positionality was difficult for this learner to assess and offers little information about the researchers?? background or experiences. However, positionality was addressed and mentioned as one of the five trustworthy strategies utilized in this study (Bradley & Goldstein, 2022). The study indicates reflexivity as it was documented and involving the assessment of researcher positionality (Bradley & Goldstein, 2022). However, the study does not explicitly discuss bias or what steps were taken to minimize bias.

Purpose: The Substance Abuse and Resilience Project, following a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework, is designed to collaboratively engage with the community to understand and address substance use disorder (SUD) disparities and to promote resilience, especially within the context of AI/AN communities (Skewes & Blume, 2019). This study aimed to create a culturally sensitive, community-driven intervention that offers sustainable benefits and empowerment to the affected communities (Skewes & Blume, 2019).

Primary Research Question: How do factors such as racism, oppression, historical trauma, and a lack of positive cultural identity contribute to the prevalence of SUD in AI/AN communities, and how might these underlying causes serve as barriers to recovery?

Assessment/Limitations of Research Design: Some strengths of the research design are community engagement, comprehensive interview protocol, interviewer training, and the inclusion of multiple voices (Skewes & Blume, 2019). However, although the study states it is a qualitative study, it is missing elements of a qualitative study, such as exploring reflexivity and positionality and how this may influence both the researchers and the interviewers (Ravitch & Carl, 2021). Additionally, although historical trauma and racism are part of the author??s primary research questions, they gathered no additional context when the subject inevitably arose during the interviews (Skewes & Blume, 2019). This additional input would have strengthened a well-designed qualitative study.
