Hello, cohort!
The article by Yob and Brewer (n.d,) helped me to view positive social change from a different angle. When thinking about the mission of most colleges and universities pertaining to the new error surrounding online learning, most would think about the most successful way to better present the curriculum to students. The authors in this article deemed the mission fulfillment for colleges and university being more challenging due to the popularity around online learning and the number of institutions with multiple locations (Yob and Brewer, n.d). Currently, literature focuses on the delivery of online instruction and not how the mission can be assured. The purpose of the study was to understand or help university staff understand positive social change, which can be challenging due to traditional images of mission fulfilment.
Shaping My Experience
Yob and Brewer (n.d) are shaping my experience by allowing to me to understand their take on positive social change by placing social change as challenging ??trends of discrimination, exploitation, oppression. According to authors, now it??s about connecting the work of the academy to the social and environmental challenges beyond the campus. It??s about the community. Social change and social purpose have been focused primarily on equity issues, although their working definitions reflect a spectrum of meanings ranging from simple activism around race and gender. Another distinction in social change is between charity and helping on the one hand and change and justice on the other. In simplest terms, charity work helps (transformational), while charity has been identified as ??transactional.?

Positive social change is an achievable goal for any evolving community. It comes from the collective desire of individuals to improve their communities, ensuring a better life for all. Such change is founded upon the pillars of empathy, education, and empowerment (Walden University, n.d.). Empathy allows us to feel the challenges of others, to understand their struggles, and to act towards healing them. Education opens the door to awareness and understanding, serving as the backbone of any informed movement. It allows us to appreciate the nuances of issues, making us less susceptible to oversimplified narratives and divisive rhetoric which is something we have become all too familiar with within our current space(s).

I also believe that the heart of positive change lies in grassroots and community movements that are grounded in compassion and empathy (Thomas et al., 2009). Positive social change must also include equality, justice, and inclusivity. Positive social change must address and rectify system inequalities that create imbalances. By continuously seeking input about the issues faced by our communities, we can better understand the complexities and nuances of the challenges at hand. Engaging in open conversation with diverse groups, volunteering our time or resources, and using our skills and various platforms to raise awareness can make a significant difference.
