Davis defines diversity as the different characteristic traits that each person has such as; Different genders, skin tones, hair colors and types, eye shapes and sizes and a realm of social differences (Davis, 2015). Disabilities are found in every race and every gender. I am unsure as to why disability would be left out of the DEI discussions. Some people who have minor disabilities may choose to be silent about those disabilities, and those who have more severe disabilities may not be able to advocate for themselves. People with disabilities may feel that the fight against racial injustice and gender inequalities are movements that need more discussion and attention.
TAB or temporarily able-bodied to me means that people who are not disabled and who are able to do anything and everything without assistance are always temporarily able bodied. We do not ever wish bad things to happen, but when they do it can cause abled bodied people to become disabled. If you consider someone who has sustained severe injuries in a car accident, they may be paralyzed from the waist down requiring a wheelchair permanently or someone who suffers severe trauma to the head resulting in a traumatic brain injury. These are just a few examples of things that can happen at any moment when we??re traveling. This adds to my understanding of disability as it does not have to be something you are born with. According to Maysoon Zayid in her TED talk, her Cerebral Palsy occurred because of trauma that she sustained when she was being born. This is not a disability that she got through her genetics; she did not catch CP like common cold (Zayid, 2014).
Intersectionality as we have learned in earlier modules is categorizing different groups of people based on their race, gender, sexual preference, class, etc. so, an example of an experience that may happen in real life is an African American disabled male being at a disadvantage not only because of his disability but also his race, as opposed to a white disabled male. Another example would be a while homosexual that is disabled, this person may also feel some disadvantage or even backlash because of the sexual preference and the disability.
