Description
To get you thinking about how you view the difference between management and leadership , please take a piece of paper, grab some colored pencils or pens and draw what a leader looks like to you. This may seem silly at first, but seriously what do you think a leader looks like? When you’ve completed your drawing, label your ideas on the picture. For example you may have drawn your leader with “big ears” because leaders need to listen.
After creating your illustration of what a leader looks like, take a new piece of paper and now draw what a manager looks like. Label your management picture the same as you labeled your leadership drawing.
Write a short explanation of each drawing. Why did you draw a leader the way you did? Why did you draw a manager the way you did? Next, on the same document, answer the questions below:
How does your leadership picture compare to the Leadership Descriptors (See attachment)? How is it the same and how is it different?
Do the same with your management drawing. How are your management descriptors the same? How are they different?
Now go through the Leadership and Management descriptors.
For each descriptor mark the one that best describes you. For example, if you see yourself as someone that bases, “success on predictability” mark the box.
Management
Leadership
*success based on predictability ?
*success based on innovation and adaption
* goals ?
* vision and values
*plans
* energy ?
Continue through the entire list of Management and Leadership descriptors. Using the same document you answered the above questions on, you will write an additional paragraph or two that answer the following questions about how those descriptors applied to you personally:
(1) Which area did you have the most marks? (2) Were you surprised by the results? (3) Do you see yourself as more of a leader or a manager? (4) Did you discover that you’re more of a leader than a manager or more of a manager than a leader? (5) Were you surprised by what you learned?
When completed, your completed assignment should include:
Your leader and manager drawings.
A description for each drawing explaining why you drew them the way you did.
A paragraph comparing your drawings to the descriptors to the ones attached.
A paragraph or two explaining your findings about how those descriptors applied to you.
